Grammar Point: imperfect verb forms

The imperfect is used to describe a past action that took place over a period of time. It describes a past "situation" rather than a past "event", for example, Cuando era pequeño, me encantaban los caballos ("When I was young, I really loved horses").
Verbs ending in -ar (like hablar), form their imperfect by adding -aba, -abas, etc. (e.g.: Yo hablaba = "I was speaking"). Verbs in -er or -ir form their imperfect by adding -ía, -ías, etc. (e.g.: Yo hacía = "I was doing ..."). Some verbs, like ser, ("to be") have irregular imperfect endings. You can learn more about the imperfect here.
