Grammar Point: "there are", "there is"
The main way to say "There is" in Spanish is to use the word Hay (pronounced like English "I"), e.g.: "There is a problem" = Hay un problema; use this word to say "There are" as well, e.g.: "There are three students in the classroom = Hay tres alumnos en la aula.
To say "There was", use the word Había, e.g.: "There was a band at the party" = Había una banda en la fiesta.
