Questions about the Preterite

Q: Why is it yo hice and NOT yo hicé?

A: It is true the preterite of the yo form ends in an accent for regular verbs. However, with irregular preterites (those that change the stem from the infinitive), no accent is used.

Q: Why is it ella quiso and NOT ella querió?

A: The verb querer is an irregular preterite because the stem is quis-.

Q: Why is it yo investigué and NOT yo investigé?

A: Verbs that end in -car/-gar have a spelling change (insert u) in the yo form of the preterite.

Q: Why is it ellos leyeron and NOT ellos leieron?

A: -er/-ir verbs that have stems ending in a vowel, e.g.: leer, oír, huír, creer use the 3rd person ending -yeron NOT -ieron.
