Description

An Overview of the Future with Ir:

One way to refer to an action that will take place is to use the verb ir ("go") e.g.: Voy a estudiar mañana por la mañana. While this is sometimes referred to as the "near" future, suggesting that the action being described will happen quite soon, that is not always the case. For example, it would be perfectly acceptable to write En 100 años, la vida va a ser muy fácil. The future with ir is an alternative to the simple future, but both can be used in writing for near or distant future actions.

How to Form the Future with Ir

The future with ir is formed by using the present tense of the verb ir conjugated with the appropriate subject, followed by a + infinitive. The preposition a is obligatory and cannot be omitted, e.g.: voy a estudiar, NOT voy estudiar. The following table gives examples of the future with ir:

Simple Future or Future with Ir?

Both can be used to describe future events. Some grammarians have suggested that the future with ir is preferred for events that are more certain or likely to occur in the near future. However, both the simple future and future with ir can be used with such events. The main difference is that the simple future is more formal and more frequent when writing.
